Many youths experience temporary arrangements like “couch surfing” before ultimately finding themselves without stable housing. On a single night in January 2023, 34,703 youth, who were not accompanied by an adult, were identified as homeless, underscoring the magnitude of this crisis. Many homeless youths lack access to long-term shelters and, in some cases, end up on the streets, exposing them to physical danger, malnutrition, and emotional trauma. Unaccompanied youth are particularly vulnerable, with approximately 22% of homeless individuals under 25 falling into this category, including many who are survivors or are currently fleeing domestic violence. One in five runaway and homeless youth are a victim of human trafficking inclusive of sex and labor trafficking. 68 percent of the youth who had either been trafficked or engaged in survival sex or commercial sex had done so while homeless (nn4youth.org, 2024).
Research shows that certain groups are disproportionately affected by homelessness. Black youth, Hispanic youth, and LGBTQ+ youth experience elevated rates of homelessness due to various factors, including discrimination, family rejection, and economic hardship. Youth from the foster care system are at even greater risk, with 12% to 36% of those aging out becoming homeless shortly after. Many young people who are homeless face challenges at home that push them to the streets, including conflict, abuse, and rejection related to gender identity or sexual orientation. Once homeless, youth often struggle with limited access to education and employment, creating barriers to self-sufficiency and further isolating them from essential support networks (Youth.gov, 2023).
Youth homelessness demands more than temporary solutions, as studies show these individuals are likely to face long-term housing instability if their needs are not addressed. Effective support must focus on sustainable solutions, including affordable housing, access to education, mental health services, and job opportunities. Awareness and advocacy are key to highlighting the issue of youth homelessness and driving change. By prioritizing the needs of these young individuals, society can work to create a future where youth homelessness is reduced, and young people can access the resources they need to thrive.
