Understanding the Complexity of Youth Homelessness

Youth homelessness is a critical and complex issue affecting thousands of young people across the United States each year. November is a month dedicated to raising awareness to youth homelessness. For Lehigh Valley Synergy Street Outreach Program Coordinator, Christina DiPierro, every day is dedicated to ending youth homelessness, advocating for the rights of individuals experiencing housing instability, and harm reduction efforts. She and Street Outreach Worker, Becky Latshaw, have been in service to the Lehigh Valley’s homeless population for over a decade and have witnessed a recent uptick in youth homelessness. Christina shared that homelessness, a state in which individuals or families lack a secure, stable, and permanent residence, can manifest in various forms, such as staying in shelters or temporary accommodations, sleeping in public spaces, relying on friends or family for temporary housing, or living in vehicles and other non-traditional spaces.

Youth homelessness demands more than temporary solutions, as studies show these individuals are likely to face long-term housing instability if their needs are not addressed. Effective support must focus on sustainable solutions, including affordable housing, access to education, mental health services, and job opportunities. Awareness and advocacy are key to highlighting the issue of youth homelessness and driving change. By prioritizing the needs of these young individuals, society can work to create a future where youth homelessness is reduced, and young people can access the resources they need to thrive.
