Valley Youth House Celebrates Grand Opening of New Drop-In Center for Youth Experiencing Homelessness in Philadelphia

Marking over 20 years of service to vulnerable youth and families in Philadelphia, Valley Youth House (VYH) officially opened the doors to its newest site, The Drop, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Thursday, April 30.

Located in the heart of the city at 1880 JFK Boulevard, Suite 101, The Drop is a low-barrier drop-in center specifically designed for young people ages 14 to 24 experiencing homelessness or housing instability. The center’s opening represents a new expansion of the Valley Youth House Philadelphia Emergency Services Department, aiming to close the gap between emergency survival and long-term housing stability.

The grand opening event featured remarks from Valley Youth House leadership, who highlighted the need for accessible, low-barrier spaces where youth can feel safe and supported without judgment. Jamel, a Valley Youth House client, also delivered remarks highlighting his life-changing experience and journey alongside his Valley Youth House Philadelphia case managers. Following the ceremony, attendees were given comprehensive tours of the new suite by Valley Youth House clients and staff.

The facility was made possible through the generous support of The John B. Rosenthal Foundation, whose partnership has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

The Drop provides a safe space where young people can access essential gateway services including food, hygiene supplies, clothing, and transportation, alongside housing referrals, one-on-one support, and life skills education to help them move from survival to stability.

“Over the last 20 years, we’ve been doing the work in Philadelphia: creating spaces for belonging behind suite numbers, cubicles and offices,” said Shani A. Meacham, JD, Senior Vice President of Programs at Valley Youth House. “However, we dreamed of a ground-level sanctuary – a place where the search for purpose could begin and continue in a space made just for youth and by youth, no appointment needed. Because of the extraordinary generosity of the John B. Rosenthal Foundation, the dream is realized.”

If you or someone you know in Philadelphia is in need of services, please call The Drop at (215) 925-3180 or simply walk in Monday through Thursday from 8:30am-5:30pm and Friday from 8:30am-3pm.
